Autoimmune diseases occur when the white blood cells, which are supposed to protect our bodies by attacking harmful invaders like bacteria and viruses, make a mistake and attack healthy tissues instead. This confusion can lead to various conditions depending on what part of the body is affected. For example, when white blood cells target the joints, it causes rheumatoid arthritis, leading to pain and swelling. If they attack the skin, it can result in psoriasis, a condition that causes red, scaly patches. When the immune system turns against the organs, it can cause lupus, which might affect the kidneys, heart, or lungs. Autoimmune diseases are complex, and researchers are still studying why white blood cells sometimes make these errors, but understanding their role in these conditions helps us develop better treatments and become more equip to take on these disease.
